Abstract Within William Shakespeare’s play Coriolanus , the title character Caius Martius refers to himself as a “lonely dragon.” This image of dragon in represents powerful fusion Celtic, Nordic, and classical myth well Christian theology—all which contain depictions dragons. Reading dragon, using Jungian archetypal terms mediated through Icelandic literature, unveils use fashion Martius’s transformation into an untamable anti-social beast whose primal violence aggression ultimately leads his slaying by Aufidius, dragon-like dragon-slayer.
